WHAT IF
As we come to the second month of the year 2010, the behavioral trend I seem to observe
year in and year out in the lives of church folk is that it starts off good in January and
February. But then the mundane gear kicks in and then it either stays stagnant or goes
downward from there. I’m reminded of the words of Apostle Paul, “For what I will to do,
that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do” (Rom 7:15). I believe that we fail to hold
on to our commitments and goals set before God simply because we either don’t fully
understand how God cares for us or we forget. With this in mind I want to share this poem
that a friend emailed me. I have used it in a sermon because it speaks a lot of volume
about God’s unconditional love for us. It is quite powerful and thought provoking. The fact
that God cares so much for us is something we take very lightly. But what if God acted as
a reaction to our actions? Feast on this for a moment:
What if, GOD couldn’t take the time to bless us today because we couldn’t take the time
to thank Him yesterday?
What if, GOD decided to stop leading us tomorrow because we didn’t follow Him today?
What if, We never saw another flower bloom because we grumbled when GOD sent the
rain?
What if, GOD didn’t walk with us today because we failed to recognize it as His day?
What if, GOD took away the Bible tomorrow because we would not read it today?
What if, GOD took away His message because we failed to listen to the messenger?
What if, GOD didn’t send His only begotten Son because He wanted us to be prepared to
pay the price for sin.
What if, the door of the church was closed because we did not open the door of our
heart?
What if, GOD stopped loving and caring for us because we failed to love and care for
others?
What if, GOD would not hear us today because we would not listen to Him yesterday?
What if, GOD answered our prayers the way we answer His call to service?
What if, GOD met our needs the way we give Him our lives?
I can think of many other things God can do that would make us think twice about our
relationship with Him. But David says that God is “slow to anger and abounding in
love” (Ps 103:8). Again he says, “For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a
lifetime…”(Ps 30:5). May we find strength to hold on to our commitments made for God
this year through knowing what He does for us even when we’re messing up and not
paying attention.
